Can you use Chat GPT for colour analysis?

In the world of personal styling and fashion, colour analysis has become an essential tool to find your best look. It helps individuals identify the colours that best complement their natural features—such as eyes, hair, and skin tone—by categorizing them into specific “seasons”. There are many different systems of matching a person to their ideal colour palette but most use a seasonal (Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter) guide to aid people in choosing clothing, makeup, and accessories that enhance their appearance. But with the rise of AI and digital tools, a common question arises: Can you use Chat GPT for your colour analysis?

My Chat GPT Colour Analysis Experience

Curious about the capabilities of AI in this area, I decided to put Chat GPT to the test. I provided the AI with my specific colour codes for my eyes, hair, and skin, expecting it to analyze and categorize me into one of the four seasons. The result? Chat GPT analyzed me as an Autumn. However, based on previous professional assessments, I am a True Spring. This discrepancy led me to explore why the AI might have made this mistake.

Why didn’t it work?

One of the challenges in using Chat GPT for colour analysis is the variety of systems and palettes available. Different colour analysis methods and consultants may use different criteria to determine your season and all have their own unique colour palettes that they feel embody that season. Some systems may focus more on skin undertones or overtones, while others may focus more on the intensity and contrast of your natural colours. This lack of standardization can lead to inconsistent results.

Moreover, it’s not clear which system Chat GPT uses, or if it tries to combine multiple systems. This ambiguity can result in a mismatch between the AI’s analysis and professional assessments. Additionally, Chat GPT does not seem to take into account “flow systems,” which acknowledge that individuals can share characteristics of more than one season. For example, someone could be a blend of Spring and Summer, but this nuance is often lost in a straightforward AI analysis.

The biggest problem is that AI cannot see the colours against your skin and perform colour analysis checks. If you are not observing what the colour is doing to a persons eyes, hair and skin and looking for checks such as harmony, smoothing, and lifting then a colour analysis is essentially not being performed.

Most importantly, Chat GPT will verbalize a colour palette to you which can be incredibly difficult to actually implement because you cannot see the colour that they are recommending. For example, if Chat GPT recommends that you wear teal, it can be hard to know which teal is the best teal for you. There are incredibly subtle variations across the palettes which is why we have a 23 palette system at Prismatic Style.

Why Professional Colour Analysis Is Essential

Colour analysis is not just about matching colour codes to predefined categories. It requires a trained eye and a nuanced understanding of how different colours interact with your unique features. A professional colour analyst can:

  1. Look at Your Face and Features: Professionals consider how colours reflect off your skin, enhance or detract from your natural beauty, and harmonize with your overall appearance.
  2. Use Specific Colour Analysis Techniques: They employ a variety of tools and techniques, such as draping fabric swatches, to observe real-time reactions to different colours.
  3. Consider Subtle Variations: Professionals can identify and interpret subtle variations in your colouring that an AI might miss, providing a more accurate and personalized analysis.
  4. Personalized Expereince: Engaging with a professional allows for a tailored experience – your analysis is specific to you and uses a specific tried and proven colour analysis system developed by experts in the field, not an amalgamation of colour analysis data.

Conclusion

While Chat GPT and other AI tools offer convenience and a starting point for exploring colour analysis, they fall short in providing the detailed and personalized assessment that a professional can offer and can be inaccurate. Colour analysis is a nuanced and complex process that benefits greatly from the expertise and trained eye of a professional analyst.

For those serious about discovering their true season and enhancing their personal style, investing in a professional colour analysis is well worth it. The insights gained can transform your wardrobe, makeup choices, and overall confidence, ensuring you always look and feel your best. So, while Chat GPT is a fascinating tool, when it comes to colour analysis, there’s no substitute for professional expertise.
